Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a large baking dish with butter.
  2. Thinly slice the potatoes using a sharp knife or mandoline for even cooking.
  3. In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat; sauté onions until golden brown. Add diced ham to warm through.
  4. In a bowl, combine heavy cream, garlic powder, salt, and pepper; whisk until blended.
  5. Layer half of the potato slices in the baking dish, followed by half of the onion-ham mix and half of the cream mixture. Sprinkle with half of the cheese.
  6. Repeat layering with remaining ingredients, finishing with cheese on top.
  7. Cover tightly with foil and bake for 45 minutes; remove foil and bake an additional 15 minutes until golden brown.
