  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (for frosting)
  • 3 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 1/4 cup milk (for frosting)
  • Chopped pecans (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour an 18×13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  3. Stir in buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.
  4. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 20-25 minutes. Check doneness with a toothpick; it should come out clean.
  5. While the cake cools slightly, melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in cocoa powder and powdered sugar until smooth.
  6. Spread the frosting over the warm cake and sprinkle with chopped pecans if desired.
